Eight contestants! So much good chili and so little time!
A little snow and high winds and cold temperatures could not stop our annual Chili contest. It is one of my favorite days at Post 1776. Not only do I get to be a Judge, but I get to eat one of favorite comfort foods: CHILI!!
We had eight contestants this year who made some of the best danged chili east and north of Amarillo. None of them offered up their top secret recipes. But hey – it’ chili right?
Here are the winners
(2nd Vice Commander Rodney Southwick presenting):
Our first place $75 winner is Kelly Lawler!
Second place ($50) went to Bob Fowler!
Third place ($25) winner is David Dodd!
Our three winners (L to R) David Dodd, Bob Fox, Kelly Lawler
At our February General Membership meeting, Third District Commander Carla Tappainer presented the Legacy Scholarship Award to our Post 1776 Commander Dick Tollefson.
” The organization (American Legion) is committed to honoring the memory and service of their fallen and disabled comrades by ensuring that their children are afforded the best possible educational opportunities. The American Legion expanded the scholarship to include children of VA-rated, post-9/11 veterans with a disability of 50 percent or higher. The number of awards varies and each award made is good for one year and may be up to $20,000.” – USAscolarships.com
There was a full house for this month’s Military Appreciation dinner hosted by Beyond the Yellow Ribbon. We had several people recognized at the event, and a great guest speaker.
First members of the BYTR group were recognized for birthdays and their outstanding work as volunteers including the Boy Scouts who took care of keeping the Veterans coffee cups and lemonade cups full.
Next up was recognition of Marv Jarvis for his years of service and dedication to Post 1776. Marv has recently stepped down as our Gambling Manager. Marv has been a member of Post 1776 for 34 years and has served as our Post Commander (twice) and as Gambling Manger among his most notable duties.
Marv served in the US Navy from 1966 to 1970 and got to serve on the then newly commissioned USS John F. Kennedy.
Marv is married to his lovely wife Rae whom he met at the Apple Valley Legion. They were wed in 1999.
And our guest speaker Jed was from the VA Adult Day Health Care Program. He gave a great overview of the services and activities available to our aging veterans.
Beyond the Yellow Ribbon does an excellent job of recognizing our veterans both at their dinners and in the community. Thank you BYTR.
Hanging up my Gambling Managers hat after so many years is hard, but the journey has been very rewarding. As many of you may be aware Jo Strong is taking over the helm as Gambling Manager III in our Post’s history.
So may lives have been touched by our very successful operation, and I see it remaining viable for many years to come. Many friends and acquaintance have been made, and I hope that I represented the Post Home in the best way possible.
Memories here include not only many friends, but different organizations that helped make Post 1776 what it is today. The Nooners Club, The Clown Club, the Early Bird Dinner, and not to be forgotten our yearly Post picnic that was held away from the Post Home, with the last away event at Thomas Lake Park in Eagan.
It’s a shame though to look at the Past Commanders on the west wall in the Club room and there are only a hand full of people that know many of the faces that made our Post history. Gary Shade is doing a lot to bring some of our history to life.
Lastly Thank you for your support in the past and in the coming years. Marv Jarvis Past Commander/Gambling manager.
The Members Only – Tom and Jerry Party held this past Sunday, January 6th, was a big hit! 85 people attended and had some amazing Tom & Jerrys whipped by Joe and Carla Tappainer (Our 3rd District Commander).
There was also a great lunch served cafeteria style.
Here are a few of the many who came, saw and enjoyed.
